As some of you may know, many shelters in our immediate area are not currently accepting clothing donations- this is not because they do not want them or people in our community do not need them! It is related more to the amount being donated and the manpower to separate and sort, as well as the need to really get out the word to people in the community where these items are available for pick-up.
Don't be discouraged- hold on to the clothes for now, because as people get back in their homes and power and communication are restored the donations are waiting for them and will go fast. As the weather gets colder, more warm clothing donations will be needed.

Here are some helpful tips for donating clothes:

1. Used clothing should be in good condition- gently worn

2. Clothing should be clean and ready to wear as many do not have access to laundry services.

3. Keep in mind the season and what type of clothing will be most needed and useful. The weather is getting cold here- hold on to the summer clothes for now and donate warm clothing, especially hats, gloves, jackets and blankets.

4. Sort and label your clothes! Always label the outside of bags and boxes you are dropping off.

Part of the problem is volunteers at the drop off site have to sort through tons of unlabeled mixed bags of clothing. Please save them a step and help make their time volunteering more efficient with quicker turn-around back into the community by placing similar items in a bag and labeling the outside of the bag (i.e. "men's pants", "women's large shirts").

For baby and children's clothing- try and sort the items by age range (e.g. "0-3 months) and/or size (e.g. "5T) tie them up and label them. Then place the items in a bag and label the outside. If there are gender specific items- you can separate them into their own bags.
